Georgia's New Math Standards Challenge Students and Teachers
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia's
board of education unanimously approved new math standards that
will combine algebra, geometry and statistics into one integrated
curriculum, as opposed to teaching each topic separately. The
new, more rigorous curriculum will require all high school students
to take the equivalent of Algebra II and will also pose a challenge
to veteran math teachers who have taught to the old standards for
years. Despite the unanimous vote, some education officials
were concerned about the significant training these teachers will
have to undergo in order to become comfortable with the new model.
The integrated approach is based on a Japanese model that is not
commonly found in U.S. schools, but has been growing in popularity
in recent years.
