Colleges Showing More Interest in Homeschoolers

In a trend reflective of the growing homeschooling movement, more and more colleges and universities are developing evaluation policies for untraditional applicants, according to an Associated Press report. While private institutions have eagerly recruited homeschoolers for years, only recently have public colleges gotten used to the idea of recruiting from this field.

In 2000, 52 percent of all colleges in the country had a formal evaluation policy for applications from homeschoolers, said David Hawkins, director of public policy for the National Association for College Admission Counseling, in the AP report. By 2004, that number had jumped to 83 percent.

Among the schools now posting application procedures for homeschoolers on their websites are Michigan State University, Oregon State University, the University of Texas, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
