High School Transcripts Examined

The National Center for Education Statistics recently released results from "The High School Transcript Study." This report examined data collected from over 20,000 students during 1990-2000. Significant findings include:

- For all subjects, the number of course credits earned by high school graduates increased; and

- High school graduates' GPAs increased (from 2.68 in 1990 to 2.94 in 2000).

The authors of the study question whether the increase in GPA is due to an actual improvement in students' achievement or grade inflation.
