Gates to Focus More Attention on School Reform
Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates announced June 15 that he
would leave his day-to-day role with the company in two years to
focus more of his attention on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
According to the New York Times, Gates will remain as
chairman and maintain his large holding in the company.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - the world's largest philanthropic
organization - is dedicated to improving health and education and
has been a leading provider of charitable ed-tech funding in recent
years. According to eSchool News, the foundation has given
over $31 million to public schools in Chicago and North Carolina.
Education leaders hope that Microsoft's loss will be education's
gain.
"He has the ability to be heard," said Marc Liebman,
superintendent of the Berryessa Union School District in San Joe,
CA. "And what he says might have the potential to move ed
tech way beyond email and PowerPoint to applications that really
change education as we know it," Liebman told eSchool
News.
