New Gates Foundation Initiative to Focus on Early Learning
This week the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced the
launch of a new early-learning initiative in Washington state that
will provide up to $90 million in grants over the next 10 years. Goals
of the initiative, which will officially begin next year, include
the creation of two model child-care centers that will offer highly
trained teachers and high-quality care. The plan comes in
tandem with Gov. Christine Gregoire's push to make early-childhood
education a signature issue.
According to the Gates Foundation's website, "more than half
the children who enter kindergarten in Washington state each year
lack the skills educators believe they need to succeed in school." By
raising the quality of early learning programs and reaching out
specifically to low-income children and families, the foundation
will be working with public and private partners to narrow this
gap.
