Former AFT President Dies at 65
Sandra Feldman, former president of the American Federation of
Teachers (AFT), died September 18 at the age of 65. According
to a New York Times report, the cause was breast cancer,
which had prevented her from running for re-election in 2004.
Ms. Feldman headed the AFT from 1997 to 2004 - the first woman
to head that post since 1930 - during which time she advocated
heavily for public schools and underprivileged children, and played
an important role in shaping the Bush administration's landmark
No Child Left Behind Act. When she retired, the U.S. House
of Representatives passed a resolution on a voice vote honoring
her for "her outstanding contributions and leadership in improving
the quality of teaching and learning."
