Early Childhood Education Takes the Spotlight in National Campaign

More than one-third of America's young children enter kindergarten lacking the preliteracy skills crucial to school success, according to research cited by non-profit early education organization Jumpstart. Raising awareness about this growing problem, its effect on children's lives, and its impact on the future of our nations' economy is the goal of the organization's "Read for the Record" campaign.

"Early learning experiences are crucial to the growth and development of young children," said Rob Waldron, President and CEO of Jumpstart. "Jumpstart's Read for the Record provides opportunities for everyone in the United States to support quality early education."

Read for the Record is a national campaign that aims to set a world record for the number of children reading the same book in a single day with an adult. On August 24, 2006, Jumpstart invites adults across the country to read Watty Piper's The Little Engine that Could to a young child. Those interested in participating may register online, take part in a local community event, or organize such an event in their own community. Those who would like to show additional support may purchase a special edition copy of the book, published courtesy of AEP member company Pearson, or donate the book to a child or community in need. One hundred percent of the purchase price will benefit Jumpstart's work with at-risk children.

Read for the Record is supported by First Lady Laura Bush and the "Today" show's Matt Lauer, and sponsored by Pearson, Starbucks, Penguin (USA), American Eagle Outfitters, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
