Bilingual ELL Programs More Effective
A review of three decades of research on ELL programs discovered
that bilingual approaches are more effective, producing higher
levels of achievement, than English-only approaches in teaching
English Language Learners. The analysis of 17 studies was conducted
by Robert Slavin of Johns Hopkins University in conjunction with
Alan Cheung with the Success for All Foundation.
This “paired bilingual strategy” involves teaching
students to read in English and in their native language at the
same time, just at different times of the day. These findings are
significant because many ELL programs are currently designed to
teach children to read in their native language before learning
to read in English, with some eventually limiting instruction in
native languages all together.
