Stagnant Middle School Reading Scores Spur Action
Educators in Maryland and Virginia are starting to target literacy
programs at adolescents after years of focusing mostly on younger
children. The recent leveling off or drop in middle school
reading scores in both states has caught the attention of district
officials, who have begun addressing the issue with a greater sense
of urgency. Montgomery County will expand literacy programs
in 14 middle schools this year and Baltimore, which has the state's
lowest performing system, has announced plans to replace 11 of
23 middle school principals and spend $6 million to improve those
schools.
