Newly-Named Teacher of the Year Uses Technology, Parental Involvement
to Reach ESL Students
Last week, the Council of Chief State School Officers named Kimberly
Oliver, a kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres Elementary School
in Silver Spring, MD, the 2006 National Teacher of the Year. During
Oliver's six years at Broad Acres - one of the most diverse campuses
in Montgomery County - reading proficiency among third-graders
on state tests rose from 11.8 percent to 75 percent. Much of that
improvement can be linked to programs Oliver and her colleagues
implemented.
Oliver received grants to buy electronic tablets her students
could take home to work on their reading skills, and four nights
a year, parents are invited to school to eat a meal and spend time
reading with their children. Oliver, whose current class consists
of 15 students - all but one of which speak English as a second
language - stressed the importance of parental involvement.
"Some cultures believe that school is the job of the educators," she
said in an Association Press report. "I believe it is about
building a relationship with those parents."
