The Children's Listbroker Privacy Act

March 2004 - Two senators have introduced legislation that would prohibit corporations from selling the personally identifiable information of children for commercial marketing purposes. The Children's Listbroker Privacy Act (S 2160) was proposed by Senators Ron Wyden and Ted Stevens. Senator Wyden cited the estimated $12 billion per year spent on marketing to children, describing concerns that "the very young are not likely to understand the intent and tactics of marketing pitches." If passed, the bill could restrict marketers’ access to mailing lists as a means of delivering information to children and families about educational opportunities, books and magazines, educational enrichment programs, and other services.
