National
Governors Association Address STEM at Annual Meeting March 8, 2007—The
NGA introduced their version of the President’s ACI (American Competitiveness
Initiative) last year and are following through by introducing an RFP to at least
six states for $500,000 to implement a statewide STEM program and an issue brief
titled “Building a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Agenda.”
Their primary recommendations are - Align state K-12 STEM standards
and assessments with postsecondary and workforce expectations for what high school
graduates know and can do.
- Examine and increase the state’s internal
capacity to improve teaching and learning.
- Identify best practices in
STEM education and bring them to scale.
The STEM RFP is for up to
six states that will develop or improve their STEM agenda. Informational sessions
will be held next week for states that would like to pursue the RFP, on March
12 from 3:00 to 4:30 and on March 15 from 3:00-4:30 EST. The final application
will be due May 15 and awards will be announced in July 2007. View
