Education and the Economic Stimulus Bill: Where is the Money?
March 19, 2009—The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
of 2009 (ARRA) contains a significant amount of money for education
initiatives. On Friday March 6 the U.S. Department of Education
released its first wave of official guidance on programs and funding
contained in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) or
the economic stimulus package.
The Department is urging that funds be spent quickly. Not all ARRA
Recovery Funds will be distributed in the same way, nor at the same
time. Some funding will be distributed in waves over time, and some
all at once. Fifty percent of ESEA Title I, Part A Grants Recovery
Funds to Local School Districts and 50% of IDEA Part B State Grants
and IDEA Preschool Grants Recovery Funds will be sent by the federal
government to States before the end of March 2009.
