Sec. Duncan Seeks Input on Race to the Top Assessment Program Competition

October 21, 2009—On October 20 U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan revealed his intention to announce a Race
to the Top Assessment Program competition by March 2010. This competition would “support one or more consortia of States that are working toward jointly developing and implementing common high-quality assessments aligned with a consortium’s common set of K-12 standards that are internationally benchmarked, and that build toward college and career readiness by the time of high school completion.”

Secretary Duncan seeks ideas on a preliminary basis, to “inform the design of this (assessment) program” and for “the development of a notice inviting applications that establishes the requirements for this competition and to provide technical assistance to States….” Input is wanted from “states, technical experts, and members of the public through public meetings and written submissions.”

After holding “public meetings” and receiving “written submissions,” the U.S. Department of Education then will publish its notice to invite applications for a Race to the Top Assessment Program Competition.
