Introduced
Education Bills Address IDEA Funding and Student LoansMay 1, 2007—Hundreds
of education related bills have been introduced in just the past few months. Yesterday,
Senator Kennedy announced he will introduce part of his NCLB initiative relating
to middle schools in the coming weeks. Senator Harkin introduced S. 1159 a bill
to fully fund IDEA to 40% of pupil costs; the House corollary HR 821 the Educate
Act by Rep. Van Hollen would do the same. New realities in English language
learning would be addressed by HR 1965, Rep. Baird (WA), which would provide two
closed circuit TV channels in schools to provide language instruction. Another
bill would set new funding priorities—HR 1702, sponsored by Rep. Woolsey
(CA), calls for the government to reallocate funds from defense spending to pay
for children’s education and health care, expanded job training, and increased
energy efficiency. Rep. Miller Chair of the House Education and Labor committee
has introduced three bills that deal with student loans. HR 890 would establish
new requirements for lenders and higher education to protect students and other
borrowers, HR 1010 would require the efficient delivery of student loans, and
HR 1608 would simplify the student loan process. |
