Secretary Duncan Testifies Before House Budget Committee About
Education Funding for the 2010-11 School Year
March 13, 2009U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan testified
before the House Budget Committee on the President's School Year
2010-11 Budget Outline. The President's full budget for FY 2010
will not be released until some time in April, 2009.
Secretary Duncan said that the President plans "to strengthen
and reform Americas education system." One essential
for "individual and national success in the global economy
is a college education." The President has set a national goal
to make America first in the world in the percentage of people holding
college degrees. Currently about 40% of individuals aged 25-34 in
the U.S. have college degrees. President Obama wants to boost that
to 60%.
Improving early childhood education, ensuring stronger standards
and assignments, improving teaching, "and scaling up successful
models of high-quality teaching and learning will help ensure
that all of our children have the knowledge and skills they need
for success in the workforce or further learning."
