Sec. Duncan Asks Schools to Draft "Continuity of Learning"
Plans
Sept. 15, 2009Due to the potentially serious widespread H1N1
swine flu threat this fall/winter in the U.S. with children,
youth and young adults especially at risk, the Obama Administration
has provided health information to states and local school districts,
and the U.S. Department of Education has provided Continuity
of Learning guidance to the nations educators.
In case schools have to close due to student and/or teacher illness,
or stay open, but experience significant levels of absences, the
Secretary asks schools/districts to develop Continuity of
Learning plans, to continue to provide resources and assistance
to students so that they can keep up with lessons and learning while
ill at home. The U.S. Department of Education has begun to partner
with some companies and other organizations who have agreed to assist
with the Continuity of Learning efforts. They seek assistance
from publishers/providers of instructional materials.
The Continuity of Learning Initiative provides an unexpected
and unique set of potential federal government relations opportunities
for some companies and organizations. There are long-term political
and policy upsides and downsides.
