AEP Sends Letter to President-Elect Obama and Transition Team

January 2009—As part of AEP's efforts to give educational publishers a greater voice in Washington, the government relations committee has written a letter to President-Elect Obama and his transition team. The purpose of the letter is to introduce AEP to the new administration, express our support for Obama's philosophy that a highly educated workforce is essential to building a strong economy, and to outline four areas that AEP is specifically interested in: 21st Century Skills in Literacy and STEM, Early Childhood Education, No Child Left Behind, and Teacher Quality. Once the transition team reviews the letter, AEP may be called upon to speak with administration officials.

"Building on the success of AEP's previous government relations efforts, such as getting language favorable to supplemental publishers included with IDEA regulations, I hope this letter is just the first stage in our relationship with the new administration," said Charlene Gaynor, CEO of AEP. "With the support of our members, the committee, and partners such as NSSEA, we are ready to take the next steps towards our goal of ensuring quality materials for every educator and student."

In addition to sending a letter to President-Elect Obama, AEP also wrote to key Congressional leaders, voicing AEP's interest in working with the 111th Congress on education legislation. AEP members who have an issue they want to share or who would like to serve on the government relations committee should contact Stacey Pusey.
