Budget Battles on the Horizon

June 22, 2007—President Bush is readying his veto pen for a showdown with Democrats over the budget. In a meeting on Wednesday, House Republican leaders presented Mr. Bush a letter with 147 signatures to support him if needed. The Republicans are characterizing the budget as tax and spend, even though much of the new spending is directed toward domestic concerns such as Education and Health care, homeland security, clean water, climate change and social services. The Democrats are also considering bringing back a troop withdraw date attached to the FY08 Defense budget.

Senate Democrats released their recommendations for the HHS/Education and Labor appropriations this week. Reading First funding was cut by 22% or $229 million compared to 61% or $629 million in the House recommendations. School improvement grants received a 300% increase for a total of $375 million in both Senate and the House. The overall increases in funding represent a 4.8% increase in the previous appropriations.
