House and Senate Release 110th Session Schedule

The House and Senate Leadership released their new session schedules that begin in January. There are many changes including the emphasis on Friday votes. The previous leadership scheduled votes on Thursday and legislators left Washington on Friday for their districts.

These are the key dates for both houses, though there are some slight differences as reported by the National Journal.

  • The House and Senate will convene Jan. 4 with the House setting an Oct. 26 target adjournment. Incoming Senate Majority Leader Reid released a tentative 2007 last month that did not include a target adjournment date.
  • The House will be out Jan. 15 for Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 25-26 for a Republican Conference retreat, and Feb. 1-2 for a Democratic Caucus retreat.
  • The House will join the Senate in recess Feb. 19-23 for Presidents Day.
  • There will be a five-week legislative stretch through March—eliminating the weeklong St. Patrick’s day break.
  • The House will take two weeks for its Easter break—the weeks of April 2 and April 9—while the Senate plans only to take off the week of April 2.
  • Both the House and the Senate will take off the week of May 28 for Memorial Day.
  • Both will also take off the week of July 2 for Independence Day.
  • Both chambers have set Aug. 6 for the start of a four-week summer recess.
  • The House will hold votes Monday, Sept. 10, and up until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, before adjourning for the rest of the week in observance of Rosh Hashana.
