(National Science Foundation) Reports Success in Improving Math ProficiencyFebruary
22, 2007—In late January the NSF released an analysis of 123 schools that
participated in the Math and Science Partnership programs. The results show increases
in student proficiency every year since they started in 2002. Some of the
most impressive increases were in elementary math where 7.2 percnet more students
achieved or exceeded proficiency from 2002-2003 and 2003-2004, followed by another
6.5 percent of students in 2003-2004 to 2004-2005. Partnerships include
local higher education institutions, the local school districts, and other community
stakeholders such as business or science education organizations. There are 52
formal partnerships and 30 other focusing on research and development of curriculums.
They are also involved in projects that recruit individuals with a background
in science, technology, math and engineering into teaching. They have supported
28 BA s to obtain MATs (Masters of Arts Teaching) in the Balitmore County School
system and have another 89 working toward teaching certificates and MATs. |
