AEP
(formerly known as EdPress) Joins AllianceJanuary 1999 Á Kids in the
Know is a lobbying effort launched by education-minded companies (see
list) to ensure the ability to reach families through the mail. Bills proposed
on state and federal levels would require parental permission to list or rent
the name of any child 16 years of age or younger. This legislation has been introduced
under names like the "Children's Privacy and Protection Act." In reality,
such legislation would prevent all sorts of legitimate educational resources Á
materials like magazine and books, information from book clubs and camps, and
even college recruiting information--from reaching children and their families.
Through its alliance with Kids in the Know, EdPress is poised to take an
active role in keeping members up-to-date on childrens privacy legislation. We
will also call upon members to testify about the effects of this type of legislation
on the educational publishing industry. We invite EdPress members to join
us in our alliance with Kids in the Know and help promote a common-sense approach
to protecting childrens privacy. www.kidsintheknow.org.
