Marianne
Carus is Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The
Cricket Magazine Group, published by Carus Publishing
Company, Peru and Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Carus is also
Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Cricket Books, a new trade
book line that publishes quality chapter books and middle-grade
novels for children ages six to twelve.
A native
of Germany, Mrs. Carus majored in English and German literature
at the University of Freiburg and completed additional studies
in French Literature and Art History at the Sorbonne, Paris,
and the University of Chicago.
In
May 2003 Mrs. Carus received an honorary doctors degree
in humane letters from the Illinois Wesleyan University
for her work in quality children's literature. With Clifton
Fadiman she co-authored Cricket's Choice, an anthology of
the best stories and poems of CRICKET's first year, which
was also translated into German. Mrs. Carus edited That's
Ghosts for You, Fire and Wings, and Celebrate Cricket, 30
Years of Stories and Art. She has spoken about children's
literature, creative writing, and children's magazines at
many universities and at writer's and literature conferences
here and abroad.
From
1982-1985 Mrs. Carus served as director on the ALSC Board
(American Library Service for Children), a division of the
American Library Association, and from 1990-1994 she was
elected to the Executive Board of IBBY (International Board
on Books for Young People), 2 years as Vice President. She
is a member of the Board of Directors of the renowned International
Youth Library in Munich and serves on the Board of Carus
Chemical Company and Carus Publishing, both in Peru, Illinois.
When
she is not working on the magazines or books and otherwise
reading and collecting the "best of the best"
of children's literature, Mrs. Carus enjoys music, art,
travel, gardening, and hiking. She is the mother of three
grown children and resides with her husband Blouke in Peru,
Illinois.
