Assessment*
Integrated Curriculum Programs* - Defined here as curricula, cut across subject area, that are organized in such a way to coordinate and combine information from various disciplines, usually in examination of a larger theme or area of study.
Remediation and Intervention** - Renamed from last year’s category “Special Education and Intervention (Learning Differences) category, these are products for students in general education settings who are performing below grade level in one or more academic areas. They may or may not be identified as having a learning difference, but they have been targeted for intervention in a subject or set of skills.
Special
Education** -
Renamed from last year’s category “Special Education and Intervention (Intellectual Disabilities)” category, these are products for students who have been identified with a significant intellectual disability (e.g. autism, Down’s syndrome). They may be taught in inclusive or self-contained settings, and they are generally performing below grade level in most subject areas because of developmental delays.

Supplemental Resources*
This category is for any product used for student instruction in a particular subject – regardless of the medium or format – that supports curriculum and basal instructional materials. Supplemental resources can support instruction in the period of a lesson, a unit, a semester, or throughout the year, but are not the core instructional resource.
Because these resources are used specifically for student instruction, entries must include teacher or instructor support materials.

Periodicals**
The Periodicals division is at the root of AEP's history—the organization was founded in 1895 by a group of classroom magazine publishers—and was the first awards category. Entry areas bore deeply into content, design, and the elements necessary for a successful publication. Print or digital publications are accepted for all categories except for blog.
The audiences for this category are PreK-12 and Adult.

Subcategories
DESIGN Article Design - The complete design of an article as it complements the editorial content of a specific article.
Cover - A cover design that clearly conveys the publication’s personality, character, and/or theme.
Illustration/Online Graphic** - A drawing, artist’s rendering, graph or chart, or computer-generated art that illustrates a story.
Visual
Story - A series of photographs and/or illustrations that tell a story.
Whole
Publication - The overall design of a periodical as it complements and enhances the editorial content and publication.
EDITORIAL
Department/Column - A group of articles easily identifiable as a regular feature of the publication, with a consistent style and tone. Please submit samples of half the columns published throughout 2011, with a minimum requirement of three.
Feature
Article - A special or prominent article, focusing on an inherently interesting practice topic, event, personality, or group, which informs, advisers, or entertains.
Learned
Article - An article of substantial length based on research dealing with an education-related issue. It offers original findings or builds on existing work to reach well-grounded conclusions presented in clear, jargon-free, and unambiguous writing. Adult

News
Story - A timely, journalistic article about a significant event or issue. It includes a compelling title, deck, and lead, logical organization, and a newsy style.
WHOLE PUBLICATION
Blog* - An online journal with a cohesive mission featuring the writers' experiences, observations, and opinions; often includes graphics and interactive elements.
Newsletter/eNewsletter - A publication consisting of articles that feature clear reporting and a functional design organized around a cohesive purpose. Please submit three consecutive issues from 2011.
One-Theme
Issue - A periodical that devotes 50 percent or more of its feature content to a single topic or issue, including visual elements that carry the theme throughout the publication.

Professional
Development
These
products are used for training and enriching educators and
contain information on classroom or school management, instructional
techniques, content in instruction, and education theory
and practice. Entries may be used on an individual or school
and district level. Print and digital formats are accepted
for all categories.
