BOOKS

Fiction
Audience:

Subjects: ESL/ELL, Reading, Specialized Audience

An individual piece of fiction written specifically for or published first in book format. These are often included with a larger subject series.

Graphic Novels
Audience: Grades 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Reading, Specialized Audience

Student books that use mostly visuals to present content and tell stories. Typically, the look of a graphic novel includes comic books.

Leveled Readers
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Reading, Specialized Audience

Student books that are developed for leveled instruction where the reading level vocabulary is greatly controlled and inserted throughout the subject series.

Poetry
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects:Reading

A work of literature that is written in meter or verse.

Non Fiction
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Reading, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

A book with factual content in a narrative format. Examples include historical, biographical, autobiographical, and scientific books, as well as graphic novels. These are often included with a larger subject area series.

Reference
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

Books that are used to support instruction, but are not enough to be used for complete understanding of a topic. Glossaries and picture dictionaries are examples.

Textbooks
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

Student or teacher books, which are not consumables, used to teach aspects of a subject area. May present core instructional materials. Examples include basal student editions, big book stories, etc.

Workbooks
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

Student books that ARE consumables, used to teach aspects of a subject area. Students can write in these books and are generally used to support existing instruction.

CURRICULUM PACKAGES

Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

An integrated and comprehensive kit for use in a school environment to teach or support a particular subject area. This may be a multimedia product. Curriculum Packages are considered instructional materials. You MUST submit teacher instructions in order to be judged. If the product comes in multiple packages, please clearly indicate what pieces make up your sample.

Activity Books
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12

Books written for the teacher that include ideas for teaching a subject area.

Educational Toys and Games
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

Toys and games whose main purpose is to teach a subject area. They can appear as toys or in a game format, but not as a book.

Learning Aids
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

Tools used to enhance and support instruction for a subject area including flashcards and other manipulatives.

Posters
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

Poster's goal is to present a subject area concepts visually. Posters are typically displayed in the classroom, and referenced when appropriate and may include teacher instructions or activity ideas.

Test Prep Resources

Resources for teachers that provide ideas as to how they can help students perform better on state and local tests.


TECHNOLOGY

Audio/Video

The product's main purpose must be to support the instruction of a subject area through video or audio. Students are watching and listening more than entering data on screen, as they would be under the software category.

Learning Appliances

Technology devices that are developed specifically for the learning and teaching of a subject area. Instruments, servers, plug-ins, click pads, etc., are examples.

Software

Subjects: ESL/ELL, Mathematics, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Specialized Audience, World Language

The software's (CD/DVD) main purpose must be to support the instruction of a subject area. Most common examples include interactive games, puzzles, and stories.

The Website's main purpose must be to support the instruction of a subject area. This may include student, teacher and parent information; games; and resources.


 

PERIODICALS

Note about Electronic Publications:
Electronic periodicals are published on a regular schedule, similar to their print counterparts. They may be delivered via a website or via email. All web-based entries must be accessible at a permanent or archived address at the time of judging. Email periodicals should be emailed to awards@AEPweb.org. Printouts will not be judged.

DESIGN

All categories are judged on adherence to design principles, originality of approach, and appropriateness for content and audience.

Article Design
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

The complete design of an article as it complements the editorial content of a specific article.

Cover Design
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A cover design that clearly conveys the publication’s personality, character, and/or theme.

Enewsletter Design
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

An electronic periodical delivered via the internet or email. The design will be judged on visual elements as well as web usability.

Illustration
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A drawing, artist’s rendering, graphs and charts, or computer-generated art that illustrates a story.

Photograph
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A single photograph that conveys emotion or interaction in a way that elicits response and supports the educational content.

Visual Story
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A series of photographs and/or illustrations that tell a story.

Whole Publication Design
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

The overall design of a periodical as it complements and enhances the editorial content and publication.

 

EDITORIAL

All editorial categories are judged on language usage, originality and creativity, and audience interest.

Department/Column
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A group of articles easily identifiable as a regular feature of the publication, with a consistent style and tone.

Special entry requirement: Submit samples of half the department/columns published during the entry year.

Editorial
Audience:
Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A brief essay written specifically for the publication, it presents a significant opinion about a timely, substantive issue.


Feature Article
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A special or prominent article, focusing on an inherently interesting practice topic, event, personality, or group, which informs, advises, or entertains.

Fiction
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12

An individual piece of fiction or poetry, written specifically for or published first in the periodical.

How-to Feature
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

An article that instructs the reader on a specific subject, with or without step-by-step instructions.

Interview/Profile
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A published discussion or question and answer between a subject and an interviewer.

Learned Article
Audience: Grades 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

An article of substantial length based on research dealing with an education related issue. It offers original findings or builds on existing work to reach well-grounded conclusions presented in clear, jargon-free, and unambiguous writing.

News Story
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A timely, journalistic article about a significant event or issue. It includes a compelling title, deck, and lead; logical organization; and a newsy style.

Play
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12

An individual short play, written specifically for or published first in, the periodical. It features a relevant topic, a compelling narrative, and quality dialogue. It can be original or an adaptation of a previously published work.

Series
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

Three or more articles on a related topic that appear in a single issue or several issues of the same periodical. The content of the articles is clearly linked. If a series appeared in more than one calendar year, the majority of the issues must have appeared in 2007.

 

WHOLE PUBLICATION

All periodicals are judged primarily on their educational value. High quality writing, design and editorial/design integration contribute to superior educational value.

Anniversary or Commemorative Edition
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A periodical published as a stand-alone anniversary edition, commemorative edition, or special supplement. Publications are produced and paid for by an education group, institution, periodical, or publisher without an outside sponsor.

Enewsletter
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

An electronic periodical delived via the internet or email that has both editorial and design content available via download or subscription.

Most Improved Publication
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

This category recognizes a periodicals dramatic progress in the standards and quality of editorial and design elements over time.

*Special entry requirement: Submit two separate issues spanning a maximum of 24 months, the first showing the publication “then” and the second showing a 2007 publication date. On a separate sheet of paper state the reasons for and the nature of the changes.

Newsletter
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A publication consisting of articles that feature clear reporting and a functional design organized around a cohesive purpose.

Special entry requirement: Submit three consecutive issues from 2007.

One-Theme Issue
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A periodical that devotes 50 percent or more of its feature content to a single topic or issue, including visual elements that carry the theme throughout the publication.

Periodical of the Year
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

Publications published on a cycle, which supplement learning in the classroom or at home.

Special entry requirement: Please submit three consecutive issues from 2007 and the publication mission statement.

Sponsored Publication
Audience: Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, Adult Learning

A periodical produced by an education group, institution, periodical, or publisher and which is paid for wholly or in part by another organization or business. While the publication acknowledges the sponsor, it presents educational material with integrity, focusing on the issue or issues without intrusive promotion of the sponsor’s products.



PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Everything in this category is written for the Adult Learner audience and is general enough to be used across disciplines and levels.

BOOKS

Audience: Adult Learning
Categories: Instruction, School/Classroom Management

Books used to support professional development in a broad curriculum sense, for example books on how students learn, best practices in cooperative learning, understanding the diverse learner, are examples. They would typically contain research supporting instructional techniques.

TEACHER RESOURCES

Audience: Adult Learning
Categories: Instruction, School/Classroom Management

Resources that support professional development that are not books. Examples include workshops, tool based products, and planners.


TECHNOLOGY

Audio/Video
Audience: Adult Learning
Categories: Instruction, School/Classroom Management

Video or audio (DVD, CD, podcast) products that deliver information about helping teachers improve instruction. Books on tape/CD and professional development videos are examples.

Software
Audience: Adult Learning
Categories: Instruction, School/Classroom Management

Software that helps teachers grow as professionals. Products may include instructional tools, management software, and information as to what to do with data collected.

Websites
Audience: Adult Learning
Categories: Instruction, School/Classroom Management

These are websites that support professional development in a broad sense. Examples include teacher blogging, communities, chat rooms, sharing resources, and ideas in using technology to better assist with instruction.

Administrative Systems
Audience: Adult Learning

Online materials that assist educators and/or administrators in a specific administrative task, for example, standards alignment, filtering, or grading. Or software that provides a comprehensive solution for classroom, building, or district management. Examples include student information systems and information management systems.

Informational
Audience: Adult Learning

A website that provides current information of educational value. Examples include news, theme-specific sites, and games.

Portal
Audience: Adult Learning

A website that serves as a gateway to educational information. It can be either education focused, general, or have an education section.
