Dan Caton joined the educational resources industry in 1976 after serving six years as a teacher and since then has dedicated himself to improving the quality, diversity, and appeal of printed and digital materials for all students and educators.
Dan began his career as a middle school teacher in southern California. He moved to educational publishing, first as a field sales representative for The Economy Company and then as an editorial manager at that company’s home office in Oklahoma City and later as the office director in the company’s editorial offices in Glendale, California. It was here that Dan first became aware of the potential for computers in the classroom. In 1984 he moved into a marketing role for Ginn & Company in Boston, developing the K-12 language and literature line and publishing the company’s first micro-computer program, a middle school program for writing. In 1986 Dan joined D.C. Heath as the leader of their software division, where he directed award-winning interactive programs such as Explore-a-Story and Explore-a-Science. He later went on to lead departments such production, graphic design, social studies, and world languages.
In 1991 Dan joined Addison-Wesley Publishing in Menlo Park, California as Vice President in the development area, where he also led the digital media development and market research teams. The growing importance of digital instruction exploded during this time with the early use of the internet in education, and, among other successes, in 1996 Dan’s teams built the first-ever educational companion website, for a high school biology program. After the acquisition of Scott Foresman in 1996, Dan led the first cross-site development team for Scott Foresman Addison Wesley Math, which established an authorship team that has educated more students in mathematics than any other for more than fifteen years. Dan moved to pure digital development again in 1998 as the development head for Computer Curriculum Corporation in Sunnyvale, California, which was the leader in adaptive computer instruction.
In 2000, Dan moved to Pearson Learning Group in New Jersey as the head of product development and then in 2003 was appointed President. Dan’s emphasis on innovation in publishing led to more firsts, such as the first true international elementary reading collection and the first commercially successful use of voice-recognition technology in early reading.
Dan joined McGraw-Hill Education in 2007 as President of McGraw-Hill Learning Group and then as leader of all product development and marketing for the newly merged McGraw-Hill School Education in 2009. McGraw-Hill’s leadership in many areas was enhanced during this time with the development of innovative digital programs that were among the first total curricula online in areas such as social studies, career awareness, and art. Dan became President of McGraw-Hill School Education in 2011, where he accelerated the transformation of the group into digital resources, with new approaches to product development, marketing, and sales. Dan retired from McGraw-Hill in April of this year, after successfully helping to lead the split of MHE from its McGraw-Hill parent.
Dan has also dedicated himself to industry and community activities. Dan served on an international study team that traveled to the Soviet Union in 1989 and then served on a similar trip to Japan in 1991. Dan has served on the technology and supplemental committees of the Association of American Publishers and eventually on the Executive Board of the School Division of that organization. He served on the board of the Association of Educational Publishers from 2004 to 2012, eventually as President of that board. Dan has also served on the board of the Yes I Can foundation of the Council for Exceptional students, the business development board of the Columbus College of Art and Design, and the board of the Columbus Symphony.
Dan now serves as a management consultant to the industry as the founder of Wittel/Morris Strategic Consulting. He lives with Liz, his wife of 43 years, in Telluride, Colorado, and he does his best to visit his two sons: Christopher, a commercial real estate research executive in San Francisco, and Nicholas, a merger and acquisition executive in the beverage industry in Shanghai, China. A first grandchild, Hannah, was just born this year.
