Mentors Help EPP Exhibitors “Go Global”
at the Frankfurt Book Fair

As part of the launch of the 2007 Educational Publishing Pavilion at the Frankfurt Book Fair, AEP members who participate in the AEP collective in the EPP get a leg up on their competitors. Through the AEP Mentor Program, participants are paired with senior-level professionals from the educational publishing industry, and AEP will help newcomers prepare for a productive first trip to the Frankfurt Book Fair.

As part of the AEP Mentor Program, here is what you’ll get:

  • Phone Meeting:  A minimum 30-minute phone consultation with your mentor to explore commonly asked questions, discuss goals and strategy, etc.
  • Product Evaluation:  A 30-minute review of your product literature focused on identifying products with international potential
  • Recommendations: Referrals to additional sources of information, industry professionals, and/or possible partners
  • Orientation Webinar: A newcomers webcast, led by AEP mentors and other experienced exhibitors, to help all participants better understand what to expect

Each AEP mentor is a veteran of educational publishing with solid experience in the international arena. Mentors will include industry leaders such as Michael Ross, author of Publishing Without Boundaries: How to Think, Work, and Win in the Global Marketplace.

The AEP Mentor Program is just another way participation with AEP in the Educational Publishing Pavilion can help you flatten the learning curve and make a quick, successful launch into the international publishing market. While personal experience is important, a trial-and-error approach costs time and money in today’s fast-paced global market. The AEP Mentor Program can help you save resources and increase opportunities for a growth-oriented international presence. For more information, please contact Joan Scavuzzo.

Some of the most common questions include the following:

  • Do we need to re-brand our products to enter the international market?
  • Which markets or global regions should I target?
  • Which book fairs should we attend to establish an international presence?
  • Besides book fairs, are there other ways to meet potential partners?
  • How can we determine which companies would be good partners for us?
  • How do I negotiate rights with larger companies?
  • How can I protect my intellectual property?
  • Should we consider outsourcing our publishing and distribution?
  • Is electronic or digital publishing something we need to consider?
  • Should we hire an international rights attorney or agent?
  • Will I need translation services?
  • Are there different term sheets for each country?
  • Can we use a standard international contract or licensing agreement?
  • Which country’s laws apply to contracts and licensing agreements?
  • How and where are disputes resolved?
  • What is the best way to handle payments and currency fluctuations?
